Attempting to Install Partition Magic and came across the InstallShield error 1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime.

Required: Windows XP CD

Go to Start > Run and type:
regsvr32 msi.dll , and hit enter.

Then go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.

In the Command Prompt window type: SFC/SCANNOW, and hit enter.

Windows File Protection (WFP) will take a few minutes or so to run. *It took me about 5 minutes.

Remove Trojan-BNK.Win32-Keylogger.gen and ave.exe malware

March 19, 2010 7 comments

So today I’ve received the pop-up after my FireFox browser crashed stating that I have a Trojan-BNK.Win32-Keylogger.gen that is infecting my FireFox browser.

Trojan-BNK.Win32.Keylogger.gen

Trojan-BNK.Win32.Keylogger.gen

I recognized it immediately to one of those fake- “you need to click here to remove your virus” aka ScareWare aka rouge anti-virus trojans/malware.

rouge antivirus - SCAREware

I’ve had Malwarebytes already installed, however the virus was keeping me from opening the program. I probably could have ran it under safe mode… but here is the solution:

Step 1.

Click Start, Run (or Windows Key + R). Type command and press Enter. Type “notepad” and press Enter.
Notepad opens. Copy all the text below into Notepad.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.exe]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\secfile]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secfile]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\shell\open\command]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

“Save As” fix.reg to your Desktop.
Double Click fix.reg and click YES for confirm.
Reboot your computer.

Step 2.

Download, update, and run MalwareBytes (if you don’t already have it)*download link is from CNETs download.com

After the “Quick Scan” is complete – Remove Selected. Prompt: Reboot your computer.

Step 3.

Well, your done. But if others have this issue, know that you have the knowledge and you should be willing to share. Let them know that MalwareBytes is one of the best solutions for rouge/fake anti-virus trojans. It’s the best tool out there to fight these specific annoyances.

I’ve been getting some hits on this page… PLEASE comment below of this has worked for you!

Click Start, Run. Type command and press Enter. Type notepad and press Enter.
Notepad opens. Copy all the text below into Notepad.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.exe]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\secfile]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secfile]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\shell\open\command]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

Save this as fix.reg to your Desktop (remember to select Save as file type: All files in Notepad.)
Double Click fix.reg and click YES for confirm.
Reboot your computer.

Data Transfer to 1tb Samsung Story – 168 GB, 3hrs+

March 8, 2010 Leave a comment

So I’m transferring 66,947 items (168 GB) of data, some things dating back to 2004, from my 320 GB HDD on the desktop to the 1TB Samsung Story I bought last month. Looking to free some space on this drive to create another partition for Data, so that I can have Windows XP, Windows 7, and Data on the same drive.

It’s just past the 3hr mark, and I think I have about 30 mins left to go. Update: The complete transfer took a bit over 3hrs. My issues is that Windows 7 does not indicate an estimate of how long it should take and how many files are left to be transferred.

If you’re moving large data try using RichCopy: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2009.04.utilityspotlight.aspx?pr=blog

… I most certainly will try it next time for speed, data security, and customizability.

Just somethings I’ve been working on and the resources so that you can do the same. I’m out of the business of doing things for other folks… but if you have the initiative to do it yourself, I’ve done the legwork to find the resources and info:

Windows 7 + Existing XP Installation Dual Boot

STEP 1 – 3/6/10 Latest Torrent – Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Retail Final x86 and x64 For just the 32-bit version try: http://isohunt.com/release/341185/windows+7

STEP 2 – Burn it to a DVD to do fresh installations. Grab a copy of the most popular CD and DVD burning tool ImgBurn – burn the ISO (you’ve downloaded) to a DVD using ImgBurn

STEP 3  – Dual Boot? Use one of the three: GParted (Open Source, Free, EASEUS (Home Version Free, Pro Cost), Partition Magic (Symantec, “cost”). I used GParted and followed this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TK5YezY-Xc

STEP4  – Install the damn thing! Windows 7 GREATNESS!

*I mounted the ISO using Daemon Tools and ran the Installation off my HDD (instead of running from DVD disk). Results: 20 mins for Windows 7 install, 5 mins to run ChkDsk, 15 mins to run the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool. Started at 9:45pm, Finish 10:25 (3/6/10) Everything is a go!

Stuck at Step 3? Need to Dual Boot and keep an existing XP or Vista Installation? Step by step using EASEUS to partition and install Windows 7  – http://www.partition-tool.com/resource/dual-boot-windows-7-xp-vista.htm or http://lifehacker.com/5126781/how-to-dual-boot-windows-7-with-xp-or-vista

Reduce time to display Operating Systems, and more info then you probably need to know about boot.ini files (I changed mine from 30 sec to 3 secs): http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/bootini.htm

Results of Bandwidth Testing. How can one automate (scheduled test)?

January 24, 2010 Leave a comment

Is there a way to automate testing (schedule them) to run every 1hr? I’m looking for a utility to do this to test out bandwidth overtime, over the course of a week or so.

The closest thing I’ve found was a program that seems to be a bit out-dated: Dan Elwell’s Broadband Speed Test – plus it isn’t free (for the automation part)

HOW FAST IS YOUR CONNECTION? TEST & SHARE (with comment reply)… use www.SpeedTest.net
